Bridging the Gap: Linking Farmers to Researchers

CAHNET (27-29 2007)
This is a report of the second regional experience sharing workshop by CAHNET held at the Mt. Elgon Hotel, Mbale, Uganda.

The theme of workshop was, “enriching our knowledge and building linkages”. The workshop had the following objectives:

To share different experiences and perspectives in the areas of community animal health
To learn lessons that will build our knowledge base and improve the impact of work in different member countries
To share different experiences and perspectives in the areas of community animal health
To learn lessons that will build our knowledge base and improve the impact of work in different member countries
To establish linkages among CAHNET members that will build synergy in CAH

The report indicates that although CAHWs are highly valued by livestock farmers especially in pastoralist areas, policies governing their practice vary greatly by country.

Various success stories and challenges were shared by the various organisations working in the five countries all underscoring the essential services provided by the CAHWs.

The workshop also received a baseline study report of a project funded by The Wellcome Trust to, among other objectives, establish reasons why researchers do not have or maintain contact with livestock keepers.
